Fosamax® Injury Lawyer in Tampa
What is Fosamax ®?
Fosamax (alendronate) is an oral drug used to treat osteoporosis in post-menopausal women, and to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis. In the past, Fosamax has also been used to treat people with advanced stages of cancer and Paget’s disease, a chronic condition that causes abnormal bone growth.
What are the Side Effects of Fosamax?
The most common side effect of Fosamax is osteonecrosis, also known as “dead jaw” or “necrosis of the jaw.” Osteonecrosis is a condition in which the bone tissue in the jaw dies and is unable to regenerate. People with osteonecrosis experience extreme pain as a result of infections, swelling in the mouth, loosening of the teeth, drainage, and exposed bone. In some cases, the abscesses that form in the mouth become filled with putrid, fouling smelling liquid, which is not only very painful and uncomfortable, but also makes it impossible to be around other people. In addition, because the mouth is swollen, osteonecrosis makes it extremely difficult to talk, eat, speak, and swallow.
Other side effects of Fosamax include gastrointestinal distress, leading to nausea, stomach pain, and constipation.
